What is Automatic Indexing (AI) on Nikkor lenses and how does it work?
Im going back about 20years here, but Im curious. AI and AI-S featured lenses for Nikon – what does that mean? PS now the proud owner of an FM2N. Yay!
Automatic indexing, or AI, allows the camera’s meter to measure exposure through the lens, at its maximum aperture. (so that you can focus and compose with a bright viewfinder) Then when you release the shutter, the camera stops the lens down to the selected aperture. The “s” in AI-s allowed for Program AE exposure mode, among other [more complicated] uses – mostly with aperture linearity. Beyond that, there is no difference between either an AI or AI-s lens. If you are using a camera without program mode, like a nikon FE2 (and your FM2n), there is no difference – but it must be an AI lens. (otherwise, you have to use stop down metering)
