What lens is better for Canon 40d? Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-70mm or Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM Lens?

I am buying a Canon 40d. I was told I should buy the body only with the Sigma 17-70mm lens. I will be doing studio work, portraits….
Please help me to decide!

Canon makes a better lens than Sigma. Remember this. When you buy a Canon or Nikon or what ever, get the lens the camera maker makes because its designed for their camera. Off brand lens like Sigma, Tokina or who ever, can only come close to what an original lens for a specific camera is. And if your going to charge for your work, you want the best lens thats available.
