What is the best digital camera of all times ? Let me hear everyone’s experience and opinion ?
Canon, Sony, Olympus, minolta or kodak .. I’m in a dilemma ? Please mention your best shot .. and do you prefer point & shot or digital SLR ?
The Sony DSC-R1 is clearly the best non-SLR camera that money can buy, currently. Nothing else even comes close to it. Basically, it is a fixed lens camera with SLR grade electronics and a high quality lens (unlike all SLR kit lenses, which are crap). It is the only fixed lens camera with an SLR grade CMOS sensor. Note that, for this price range, 10 megapixel cameras use a crappy CCD sensor (ironically produced by Sony). This includes Sony’s digital SLR, the A100 (which is total crap).
Unlike an SLR camera, it has an EVF, which allows you to not only see what your picture will be like before you take it with great accuracy, but also allowing various tools to be used for making sure the settings for the picture are optimal for that shot.
For 99% of people who want a top of the line camera, this is the one they will be most happy with. It performs as well as all entry level dSLR cameras with one caveat, using a high ISO setting for night photography without a flash, causes more noise with the R1 than it would with a good entry level dSLR like the Digital Rebel XT. If you do alot of night photography without a tripod, you will want an SLR (or you could simply use a tripod, lol).

For digital SLR cameras, Canon is far and away the best. If you have money and want the best dSLR camera that a non-pro could possibly use, then what you want is the Canon EOS-5D:

Get this lens as your standard walking around lens for about $360. Canon knows that if you are shelling out this kind of cash for a camera, you don’t want no crappy kit lens (sold as body only):

Canon also makes the EOS 1D series (two of them, I think). These are the best of the best (and extremely expensive). You would have to be a flaming moron to waste money on these cameras though unless you are a professional using them in your business (go buy a car instead, lol). To my knowledge, the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II is the best (and most expensive) dSLR that is available anywhere. We are talking like $7 grand here just for the body.
